'SEAL'
--Surfaces are a constant battle to keep clean, particularly with the effects of the weather in South Wales. RW can reclaim & renovate your outdoor driveways, pathways & entertainment areas regardless of the type of surface (typically slate, block, patterned concrete, paving stones, interlocking bricks or natural garden stone) & with careful consideration, select the right products to improve natural colours & protect the finish.
--By using average 'do-it-yourself' jet-washers & sealants, it is difficult to prepare & protect the surface correctly - the weather, rain, frost and sun will simply attack & severely damage the finish (including the jointing sand) leaving the surface in a very poor condition all over again, in a short space of time. Therefore, it is important to have the right tools & products in order to achieve & maintain long term appearance & protection.
--Surfaces can be treated with a transparent sealant that is intended to protect from stains & weathering, filter UV rays & inhibit weed growth - reducing the chore of weeding & in the case of the block type, stabilise the jointing sand - it also prevents the 'mining' of ants. There are a number of specific sealants available for use on wet-cast, semi-dry, flag or natural stone paving surfaces.
--For tarmac and asphalt there a number of products available to seal the surface & not only do they recolour faded tarmac for example, but also fill small cracks and fissures, preventing the ingress of water, which leads to larger cracks and pot holes - also offers resistance to oil and chemical attack and inhibit moss and algae growth.
RW have available a selection of sealants & their efficacy often seems proportional to their price. However, it is essential that the correct product is used for each type of surface. In our experience, it is better to choose a sealant specifically developed, rather than a 'jack-of-all-trades'.
- WATER BASED EMULSIONS
- MOISTURE CURED URETHANES (Specialist Pre-Polymer Urethanes or Polyurethane)
- SOLVENT BASED ACRYLICS
- HYDRATED POLYMER GLUES
- Most common here in the UK are Acrylics and urethanes
- If the surface is block paving or imprinted concrete, there is a block paving and imprinted concrete sealer. This sealer is specifically designed for these man-made products.
- If the paving surface is stone, slate or travertine or any other natural material, there is a stone and slate sealer as it has been designed for the differing physical & chemical properties of natural materials.
- For clay paviors (brick paving) there is a stone and slate sealer as clay paviors/brick pavers are made from clay, which is a natural product. If high gloss or a very hard wearing sealer is required there is a heavy duty sealer. Also available is a total matt finish.
An eco friendly water based sealer is ideal for most unglazed surfaces - these are odour free and will impart an attractive sheen.
How much you need will depend to a large degree upon how porous the surface is. For example an old and weathered block paving driveway will require more sealing than a brand new one as the surface has worn and become more porous. In general terms, however, you will need about 25 litres to cover 60 sqm of paving with a recommended 2 coats.
